Preparing Students to Surf "The Third Wave" In 1980, futurist Alvin Toffler predicted the oncoming swell of a "third wave." Where the first wave ushered in an agricultural society and the second brought an industrial one, Toffler predicted that the third wave would bring with it a digital revolution. Steve Case, founder of AOL, expands Toffler's vision with today's reality: the "internet of everything" brings a new set of implications for education. How do we prepare our students to surf this third wave within a school system founded on the second? How do we help students to develop the ability to seek out novel problems, engage in global communications, and synthesizing information from millions of sources? Strategies such as Project-Based Learning (PBL) and Design Thinking offer scaffolds not only for teacher instructional design but also for helping to shift the paradigm of classroom practice so that we can ultimately encourage our students to become problem seekers as well as problem solvers.
